innovative and sustainable
viticultural and oenological techniques for the enhancement of calcareous soils

The Project

The VEISCA project was launched in 2020 with the aim of producing wines with recognisable characteristics, traceable and closely linked to the territory of origin, characterised by the quality, marked minerality and longevity typical of wines generated by vineyards on calcareous soils. This is achieved by adopting specific viticultural and oenological protocols to manage the influence that calcareous soils exert on the vegetative-productive activity of the plants and on the qualitative characteristics of the grapes and wines produced.

Project duration

30 months

Project partners

13 partners

Project location

Menfi (AG)

Objectives

The aim of the project is to apply these viticultural and oenological protocols for the management of certain types of high-potential calcareous soils in the Menfi area, on Sicily's southwest coast. This translates into adopting special agronomic and oenological techniques to enhance the organoleptic qualities of the grapes and at the same time cope with climatic changes without affecting the quality standards of the wines.

Activities

On the farms located in the identified areas and at the Cantine Settesoli winemaking facilities, protocols have been adopted to give efficiency, sustainability and typicality to the product, through careful analysis of the soil/grapevine relationship. This is because the characteristics of the calcareous soil are mirrored in those of the roots, to understand the role of the soil in influencing the development and efficiency of the root system.
